Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart Welcomes Launch of Waiting List Reimbursement Scheme

Carla Lockhart MP • June 4, 2025

Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart has welcomed the opening of the new Waiting List Reimbursement Scheme (WLRS), launched by the Department of Health on 2 June 2025, which aims to support patients in Northern Ireland who have faced lengthy waits for treatment or surgery.

Speaking on the issue Carla Lockhart MP said:

“I warmly welcome the launch of the Waiting List Reimbursement Scheme. Far too many people in Northern Ireland have been left waiting years for vital treatment, and this scheme provides a much-needed option for those who have reached the end of their patience and endurance.”

“This is a practical step that will allow patients who have been on a Health and Social Care waiting list for more than 104 weeks, that’s two full years, to access treatment privately in the Republic of Ireland and have those costs reimbursed, with prior approval.”

“It’s essential that people know the details: you must be ordinarily resident in Northern Ireland, have been waiting over 104 weeks for a surgical or inpatient procedure commissioned by the Department of Health, and apply in advance for approval. Travel and accommodation costs aren’t covered, but the treatment itself can be reimbursed , either in full or up to the HSC equivalent cost.”

“This will make a real difference to individuals and families who have been left in pain, anxiety, or worsening health while waiting for care. I encourage anyone who believes they may be eligible to visit the Department of Health website and explore this option.”
