Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart Commends Community Spirit at Portadown Commonwealth Parade

Carla Lockhart MP • June 4, 2025

Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart has praised the outstanding turnout and community effort at this year’s Portadown Commonwealth Parade, describing it as a “celebration of service, tradition, and togetherness.”

Speaking after the event Carla Lockhart said:

“What a wonderful day at the Portadown Commonwealth Parade. It was fantastic to see so many young people, and lots of wee tots, proudly taking part. Their enthusiasm, energy and discipline were very encouraging. Despite the sun, wind, and even the odd cold blast, the atmosphere was full of warmth and community spirit.”

“A heartfelt thank you goes to our incredible bands, cadets, and the outstanding leaders who give so much week in, week out to our uniformed youth organisations. Their commitment and influence are shaping the lives of so many young people in such a positive way.”

“The numbers on parade were so uplifting and a real reflection of the strength and health of these groups locally. These children are being led by people who care deeply about their development, both practically and spiritually.”

“Special appreciation must go to the organising team. It’s no small task to coordinate so many children across multiple locations, including three different churches. It really is like a military operation and once again, it was pulled off seamlessly.”

“I also want to thank the churches across Portadown who so willingly opened their doors and hearts to accommodate the parade. Their support makes such a difference and speaks volumes about the values that underpin our community.”

“Only eternity will reveal the fruit of this labour of love. Proverbs 22:6 reminds us: ‘Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.’ That was clearly being lived out today.”

“To everyone involved thank you. From organisers and leaders to parents and churches, your dedication is making a lasting impact. And to the children who took part with pride and purpose you made us all proud.”

Carla Lockhart MP was joined on the day by ABC Council colleagues Margaret Tinsley, Lavelle McIlwrath, and Peter Haire, all showing their support for this important annual event and the young people at its heart.
