"I am extremely humbled that people put their trust in me and voted to elect me as their Member of Parliament."

"It is an honour and one I will hold dear. I will not let the people of Upper Bann down. I did not make promises in my election literature that I do not intend to deliver on. I want to work with everyone to improve the lives of my constituents."

Honour and gratitude for the British Armed Forces.

Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart has tabled an Early Day Motion in the House of Commons honouring and expressing gratitude for the British Armed Forces, in the wake of recent public commentary that caused deep concern and upset among serving personnel, veterans and their families.

Carla Lockhart MP said:

“I tabled this Early Day Motion to place on record my deep respect, honour and gratitude for the men and women of the British Armed Forces, including those currently serving, reservists and veterans. Their courage, professionalism and willingness to serve protect the freedoms we enjoy and should never be diminished or questioned.

“This motion comes at a time when recent public commentary, even where later clarified, caused genuine hurt and concern among those who have worn the uniform and among their families. Words matter, and careless or ill judged remarks risk undermining the sacrifice and service of those who have given so much.

“I also wanted this motion to explicitly remember those who paid the ultimate price. In Upper Bann, we will never forget Lance Corporal Stephen McKee of the Royal Irish Regiment and Lieutenant Neal Turkington of the Royal Gurkha Rifles, both of whom lost their lives while serving in Afghanistan. Their bravery, sacrifice and legacy will forever be honoured.

“Northern Ireland has a proud and long standing tradition of service within the Armed Forces. Families across our communities have supported loved ones through deployments, danger and loss, and their contribution must also be recognised.

“This Early Day Motion sends a clear and unambiguous message that the courage, devotion and sacrifice of our Armed Forces and their families reflect the very best of our nation. They will always have my full support, respect and gratitude.”

The motion has already received support from a number of Members of Parliament, including Jim Shannon MP and Jim Allister MP, and remains open for others to add their names.
