‘Royal 13th’ continues to exceed expectations

Carla Lockhart MP • July 18, 2023

DUP MP for Upper Bann Carla Lockhart has said the huge crowds in attendance at the ‘Royal Thirteenth’ RBP demonstration in Scarva is a huge endorsement of the event, and all those who take part in the event both on parade and in organising it.

The local MP said:

“Year on year Scarva grows and grows. This small rural village transforms into one of the largest one day cultural events in the whole of Europe, with visitors from right across the UK and beyond bolstering the crowds of people who travel from every corner of Northern Ireland to spectate or take part.

Whilst for many the highlight of the day is the ‘Sham Fight’, the whole event is a wonderful showcase of the Royal Black Preceptory, and the huge talent that exists within local marching bands. A huge amount of work goes into reaching the musical excellence on display, and all these bands and indeed the RBP is wholly driven by volunteers. Furthermore, this event is wholly organised by volunteers, which is a huge logistical feat when over 100,000 people are in attendance. Congratulations must again go to RBP 1000 the host for the day, as always an exceptional effort.

Scarva is now a firm fixture in the diary for so many people. On the back of the Twelfth demonstrations the day before, it is a key part of a two day showcase of our culture and heritage. I congratulate all those involved in making these events such a success.”
