Lockhart praises record crowds at Royal Black Institution Demonstration in Scarva

Carla Lockhart MP • July 15, 2026

Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart has hailed this year’s Royal Black Institution Demonstration at Scarva as a resounding success, describing it as a powerful celebration of faith, culture and community following record-breaking attendance.

Mrs Lockhart joined thousands of spectators and participants at the annual Sham Fight, where 76 preceptories and bands took part in the parade before what is believed to have been one of the largest crowds ever witnessed at the event.

Mrs Lockhart said:

“This year’s demonstration at Scarva was truly exceptional. With record crowds and 76 preceptories and bands on parade, it was an unforgettable showcase of our culture, music and traditions."

It was wonderful to see Upper Bann so well represented, with Sir Knights marching alongside outstanding pipe, accordion, silver and flute bands. The colour parties were impeccably turned out, while the drum majors once again demonstrated tremendous skill, precision and pride.

I’ve never seen crowds like those at Scarva this year. Well over 100,000 people lined the route, in places five, ten and even fifteen rows deep, all enjoying the family atmosphere, the music and the pageantry. It was a fantastic advertisement for Northern Ireland and everything that makes this event so special.

Over recent days we have once again seen our culture celebrated with pride, dignity and growing confidence. For those who spend this time of year seeking to criticise or diminish our traditions, the success of events like Scarva speaks for itself.

Our traditions remain vibrant, our culture is flourishing and people are proud to celebrate their heritage openly. Northern Ireland has so much to offer, and Scarva is one of the finest examples of that.

I want to congratulate everyone who played a part in making the day such a success, particularly Royal Black Preceptory No. 1000 for hosting another outstanding event. I also extend my sincere thanks to my good friend Sharon McCrum, whose early start each year ensures I enjoy one of the best vantage points on the route, and to the many people who stopped to say hello throughout the day. It was a pleasure to meet so many familiar and new faces.

It was also great to round off the day by catching the return parade in Lurgan, where Broxburn once again had the crowds thoroughly entertained.”
