Lockhart Raises Serious Concerns Over Condition of Lurgan and Kernan Cemeteries
Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart has raised serious concerns regarding the condition of both Lurgan and Kernan Cemeteries following a growing number of complaints from residents and families.

Mrs Lockhart said she has been actively engaging with council officers after concerns were raised about overgrown weeds, grass cuttings being left around graves and memorials, and reports of rubbish and broken bottles, particularly at Lurgan Cemetery.
Speaking on the issue, she said:
“I have been contacted by a number of residents and families who are deeply concerned about the condition of both Lurgan and Kernan Cemeteries. These concerns cannot simply be ignored. Cemeteries are places where people come to remember and reflect, often at emotional and difficult times, and they should be maintained with the dignity and respect that families rightly expect.
Issues raised with me include overgrown weeds, grass cuttings being left around graves and memorials and reports of rubbish and broken bottles. Families should not have to repeatedly raise concerns before action is taken.”
Mrs Lockhart was keen to recognise the efforts of staff working on the ground.
“I do want to be fair and acknowledge that the cemetery manager has always been responsive and works hard to address issues when concerns are raised. Council responses have also highlighted staffing pressures, including the fact that only one member of staff is currently covering Kernan Cemetery.
However, if staff on the ground are doing their best under difficult circumstances, then serious questions need to be asked of council leadership. The issue cannot simply be passed down the line.”
Mrs Lockhart also expressed ongoing concern over the decision not to lock cemetery gates, particularly in light of anti-social behaviour concerns.
“I remain concerned about the decision not to lock cemetery gates. Given ongoing anti-social behaviour issues and concerns raised with me by families, I have now escalated this matter and believe it needs to be reviewed again.
Our cemeteries should be places of peace, dignity and respect. Families visiting loved ones deserve nothing less.”
