Government urged to ditch obnoxious legacy proposals

Carla Lockhart MP • February 7, 2023

DUP MP for Upper Bann, Carla Lockhart, has met with innocent victims of terrorism and victims campaign groups at Westminster, to provide a united voice against the Government’s proposed Legacy Bill. Mrs Lockhart said the proposal to provide an amnesty for terrorists was immoral, and must be stopped.

Carla Lockhart said:

“The Legacy Bill proposed by the Government is toxic, immoral, legislation, that has united victims groups in opposition to it.

It is time for the Government to find their conscience. The proposal to introduce an amnesty for those who carried out some of the most brutal, heinous and bloody acts of terror is just wrong. It is remarkable that any Government that describes itself as democratic would propose such an unjust law to protect those who sought to override the democratic basis for our constitutional status, or any other terrorist.

We must protect the right to justice. Surely that is a key tenet of our rights as British citizens. Whilst the hope of justice does wane with time, that hope ought to never be extinguished. If this legislation passes, that is what will happen. It is a horrific act to inflict upon victims who have lost loved ones and bare the scars of loss to this day.

It was an honour to stand with victims from Northern Ireland at Westminster to express our opposition. I trust the Lords will see sense, and oppose this legislation.”
