MP Christmas Message

Carla Lockhart MP • December 29, 2021

This time last year we all hoped that 2021 would see us leave COVID-19 behind us, and that life would return to normal.

This time last year we all hoped that 2021 would see us leave COVID-19 behind us, and that life would return to normal.

That hasn’t been the case. The last twelve months has sadly seen many people in our community lose their lives to COVID-19. Many others have passed away due to the impact of the pandemic on our wider healthcare provision. For these households, Christmas will be difficult. All are very much in my thoughts and prayers over the coming weeks.

Of course, for other households this Christmas time will be challenging financially. The loss of employment, the rise in cost of living, the reduction in Universal Credit and the ever-increasing commercialisation of Christmas will put many households under strain. I am constantly moved by the generosity within our community to help those in need. The wonderful work of local food banks, community groups and the support of charities, can make the difference at Christmas for families who just need that little helping hand. If you are reading this and need help, please take comfort that you are not alone, and that help is available. Please feel free to reach out and contact me directly.

This has again been a most difficult year for our frontline healthcare staff. While many of us look forward to some time off over Christmas, our nurses and doctors, care assistants, hospital porters and other healthcare workers will not get the same break. Likewise, those in our emergency services – our ambulance service, fire service, police, and military – will get no such break. More than ever, they deserve our thanks, and it is my hope for 2022 that they finally get the financial reward they deserve for the incredible work they all do.

2022 is looking like a challenging year once again. However, as I look across Upper Bann, I see a community that is resilient, caring, compassionate and united in meeting any challenge together. There are so many examples of people going the extra mile to help others, it is both humbling and inspiring.

Of course, it is this message of self-sacrifice, compassion and hope that is at the heart of the Christmas story. Jesus, the new-born King, came to this world in love. He healed the sick. He fed the hungry. He was a sacrifice for us. Where there is seemingly no hope, he offers everlasting hope to those who trust in him. Amidst all the hustle and bustle of Christmas, he offers the greatest gift to those who will accept it. Salvation. It is my hope and prayer this Christmas that each one of you get the gift you need.

A Very Happy Christmas to everyone in Upper Bann.”
