Lockhart hosts SoS on visit to flood hit Portadown
Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart has hosted a visit by the Secretary of State, Chris Heaton-Harris MP, to Portadown in recent days to meet with businesses and residents impacted by the recent devastating flooding.

Speaking after the visit, the DUP representative said:
“Portadown is still coming to terms with the impact of the unprecedented flooding that occurred a number of weeks ago. Such a vast area was several feet under water, and the consequences of this was utter destruction and devastation to homes, businesses and community facilities.
In the immediate aftermath of the flooding, it was vital that the Government stepped up with support to ensure that businesses would reopen, jobs and family incomes secured, and the local economy supported to recover. Along with my Party Leader Sir Jeffrey Donaldson MP, and other colleagues, we met the Secretary of State and secured financial assistance that has gone some way to helping businesses respond. However, we are in no doubt that in Portadown, and indeed other areas impacted so significantly by flooding, more must be done to aid recovery and then install robust flood alleviation measures.
Today offered some of those most impacted an opportunity to discuss their experiences, and the need for further support. I welcome the willingness of the Secretary of State to engage with the local community – it is vital that their voice is heard, and that Government responds accordingly. During the visit he spoke with Kerr’s Tyres who were flooded, Portadown Boat Club, Rivers Agency and the officials from Council who responded in the aftermath.
Unfortunately, 1 in 100 year weather episodes are now much more common. We are going to have to adapt and live with this new reality, and therefore we must prepare and protect our communities. Now is the time for Government to plan and act. Further delay will only result in further devastation.”
