Upper Bann MP Attends 50th Anniversary Remembrance for Private Eva Martin

Carla Lockhart MP • May 14, 2024

P for Upper Bann, Carla Lockhart, recently attended a commemorative event marking the 50th anniversary of the death of Private Eva Martin. Private Martin, who served in the Ulster Defence Regiment, was tragically killed in a rocket attack on May 2, 1974, at The Deanery base near Clogher, County Tyrone. She was 28 years old and notably the first female soldier and Greenfinch to be killed during Operation Banner.

The remembrance service, organised by the Ancre Somme Association Charity, was held in the grounds of Brownlow Castle. Deputy First Minister, Emma Little Pengelly, planted a tree and unveiled a memorial plaque in honour of Private Martin's courageous service and sacrifice. The ceremony included a heartfelt tribute from Lt Col Ant Maher, the patron of the charity, and was followed by a remembrance service led by the charity's padre, Rev Derek Kerr.

Carla Lockhart MP expressed her appreciation for the event, stating, "It was a deeply moving service, and it was an honour to represent the people of Upper Bann at this service, which saw a strong turnout from members of the UDR, the Ancre Somme Association, and friends and colleagues of Eva. This event not only commemorates Eva's memory but also reinforces our commitment to remembering the sacrifices made by those who served to protect the people of Northern Ireland against terrorism. It is crucial to remember all who served in this way and to honour their memory by ensuring that their history is never allowed to be rewritten."

The DUP MP also commended the Ancre Somme Association for their exemplary organisation of the event, adding, "Well done to everyone involved in making this event a respectful and fitting tribute."
