Recognising the Vital Role of Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialists

Carla Lockhart MP • March 19, 2025

Last week marked National Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) Day, a time to acknowledge and celebrate the exceptional work of Cancer CNSs across Northern Ireland. These highly skilled professionals play a crucial role in supporting cancer patients and their families, providing expert care, guidance, and reassurance at every stage of the journey.

MP for Upper Bann, Carla Lockhart, visited the Mandeville Unit at Craigavon Area Hospital, where she met with Clair Quin, Head of Cancer Services, and Denise Newell, Assistant Director of Cancer and Clinical Services, to learn more about the latest developments in cancer care. The visit highlighted the positive impact of the new bespoke Assessment Room, which enables patients requiring urgent treatment or assessment to receive prompt care during the Unit’s opening hours.

Carla Lockhart commented:

It was an honour to meet Clair and Denise and hear about the incredible work being done to support cancer patients. The new Assessment Room is a fantastic step forward, ensuring quicker access to vital care. I was also encouraged to hear about the Rapid Diagnosis Centre in South Tyrone, which is helping to detect cancer earlier by providing faster assessments for patients with concerning symptoms. These improvements are making a real difference in people’s lives.

She added:

Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialists are more than just medical professionals – they are a lifeline for patients and their families. Their dedication, expertise, and compassion make an incredible impact every single day. On National Cancer CNS Day, and every day, we owe them our deepest gratitude for the vital role they play in cancer care.”
