MP welcomes farming resources for primary school children

Carla Lockhart MP • May 7, 2024

DUP Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart has welcomed the partnership between the UFU and Twinkl aimed at teaching primary school children about agriculture in Northern Ireland.

“The new initiative will provide valuable resources to schools, giving children a better understanding of where food comes from and the important role the agri-sector plays within rural communities and the economy in Northern Ireland.”

Ms Lockhart, who is the DUP Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs spokesperson at Westminster added: “Primary school children in rural and urban areas will have access to fun and interactive resources. Designed for key stage one and key stage two age-groups, the free activity sheets will teach children about the food we eat, including its origins and the various production processes.

“The activity sheets will give P1 to P7 pupils a better understanding of the ‘farm to fork’ message, and I would encourage teachers to utilise the resources available to deliver farming, environment and land-based lessons as part of their ‘world around us’ curriculum.”

Carla Lockhart concluded: “Farmers work hard on a daily basis to produce milk, meat and seasonal fruit and vegetables for consumers. Twinkl’s carefully designed farming through the seasons and food seasonality calendar worksheets will enhance learning and give pupils a better understanding of how farmers grow and produce nutritious, fresh and fully traceable food for our plates.”
