Lockhart Reveals Victoria Cross Case for Lt Col ‘Paddy’ Mayne Remains Under Consideration
Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart has revealed that the case for awarding a posthumous Victoria Cross to Lieutenant Colonel Blair “Paddy” Mayne remains under active consideration by Government.

Correspondence from the Minister of State at the Ministry of Defence confirms that, following last year’s parliamentary debate on the issue, the Cabinet Office HD Committee has been tasked with determining whether the award of a Victoria Cross can now be considered.
Mrs Lockhart has been at the forefront of the campaign alongside colleague, Jim Shannon MP, to see Lt Col Mayne recognised with the highest military honour for his exceptional gallantry and leadership during the Second World War.
Speaking following receipt of the update, Mrs Lockhart said:
“I welcome confirmation that this matter remains under active consideration and that further examination is ongoing.
“Lt Col Blair ‘Paddy’ Mayne’s courage, leadership and contribution during the Second World War are beyond dispute. Many veterans, historians and members of the public believe that his service merits the highest possible recognition.
“Following the parliamentary debate last year, in which I was pleased to play a key role alongside my colleague Jim Shannon MP, it was agreed that the Cabinet Office HD Committee would consider whether a posthumous Victoria Cross could now be awarded. It is important that this process is comprehensive, fair and transparent.
“This campaign is about ensuring that extraordinary gallantry is properly recognised. I will continue to press for a full and fair review and look forward to further updates being brought before Parliament.”
Mrs Lockhart thanked all those who have supported the campaign and said she remains committed to seeing the process through to its conclusion.
