Lockhart Praises Bonfire Celebrations and Cultural Events Across Upper Bann: “A Powerful Celebration of Culture, Community and Pride”
Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart has praised bonfire builders, community groups and organisers across Lurgan, Portadown, Banbridge and surrounding areas for delivering a truly outstanding series of cultural celebrations in the lead-up to the 11th and 12th of July.

From family fun days to heritage talks, remembrance events to community bonfires, the MP described the atmosphere across the constituency as “uplifting, proud and filled with positivity.”
“Across Lurgan, Portadown and Banbridge, communities have come together in a brilliant way this year to celebrate our rich culture and heritage with pride, dignity and respect,” said Carla Lockhart.
“In Killicomaine, the Residents’ Group truly excelled. It was a fantastic afternoon of fun around the bonfire, filled with energy, smiles and community spirit. Huge thanks to Keith, the entire group, the local church for its hospitality, and the Jubilee Club for their involvement. The bonfire itself was superb a real credit to the dedication and craftsmanship of the builders.”
Carla Lockhart also highlighted the exceptional work done in Mourneview and Grey Estate, where a week of events was held as part of the South Lurgan Culture & Community Festival.
“The 11th Night Fun Day in Mourneview was absolutely buzzing. From family fun, petting zoos and kids’ activities to a fantastic tea dance for our older residents, it had something for everyone. Huge well done to Johnny and the South Lurgan Community Forum who pulled together an entire week of cultural events, from Ulster-Scots heritage nights to sport and remembrance. It was a real example of what community spirit looks like in action.”
“The Mourneview / Grey Estate bonfire was another triumph – a great structure lit with pride and enjoyed by all who came along. Events like this showcase the best of our community.”
Lockhart also commended the atmosphere in Banbridge, where bonfire celebrations and community activity were delivered in a way that brought people together in a spirit of celebration and respect.
“Banbridge this year again set a high standard in its approach to community-led bonfires and cultural celebration. The positive leadership shown in areas like Huntly and Seapatrick, where organisers have prioritised respectful celebration while honouring tradition, is something that deserves real praise. These bonfires are rooted in history going back to 1690 and the work being done now helps ensure that meaning and dignity are preserved for future generations.”
“What we’ve seen over these days is the best of our people standing tall, proud of who they are, and committed to building stronger communities. I want to thank every organiser, steward, band member, bonfire builder and volunteer who helped make this year’s celebrations so memorable. You are a credit to your areas and to our cultural traditions.”
