Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart has officially marked the 150th anniversary of Carleton Street Orange Hall in Portadown by tabling Early Day Motion (EDM 1627) in the House of Commons, recognising the hall’s cultural, historical, and architectural significance.

Built in 1875, Carleton Street Orange Hall has stood for a century and a half as a cornerstone of Portadown’s civic life a building of heritage, resilience and community pride. It has served many roles: a Loyal Order meeting place, a base for Allied war efforts, and today as a vibrant Heritage Centre, keeping the story of local history alive for future generations.
The wording of EDM 1627 is as follows:
“That this House congratulates Carleton Street Orange Hall on the 150th anniversary of its construction in 1875; notes that the Hall has served the local community as a centre for cultural celebration and civic life over generations; recognises its role during the world wars in support of the Allied cause; commends the efforts of the trustees and Portadown Heritage Tours Ltd in preserving and promoting the Hall’s history; welcomes the commemorative activity to mark this significant milestone, including the reinstatement of the Hall’s original arch and the publication of a commemorative booklet; and wishes Carleton Street Orange Hall continued success as it enters its next chapter as a living piece of Portadown’s built and cultural heritage.”
Speaking about the significance of the EDM, Carla Lockhart said:
“It’s only right that Carleton Street Orange Hall’s proud legacy is recognised in the official records of Parliament. For 150 years, this building has been a hub of tradition, community service and cultural celebration and it continues to thrive in new and meaningful ways.”
“The dedication of the trustees, the committee, and Portadown Heritage Tours Ltd. in preserving this remarkable space is nothing short of inspirational. The reinstatement of the original arch, removed during wartime, and the beautifully produced commemorative booklet are both touching and tangible reminders of all this hall represents.”
“It is my hope that generations to come will continue to walk through its doors, learn its history, and feel the pride that so many in this community already do.”
Carleton Street Orange Hall & Heritage Centre remains open to the public for tours, educational programmes and cultural events, continuing to tell the story of Portadown’s past while shaping its future.
