Statement of intent must be backed up by action – Lockhart

Carla Lockhart MP • May 24, 2022

DUP MP for Upper Bann Carla Lockhart has given a cautious welcome to the statement given to the House of Commons by the Foreign Secretary concerning the Northern Ireland Protocol. The Government has outlined the broad framework of forthcoming legislation to address community concerns at the economic and political impact of the Protocol.

Speaking after the statement, Carla Lockhart said:

“Today represents a welcome step forward in the dismantling of the Protocol.

After months - indeed years - of downplaying our warnings and concerns, Her Majesty’s Government now recognise that what we have been saying since the inception of the Protocol has been correct. It is profoundly damaging to the political process, and to the economic wellbeing of everyone in Northern Ireland.

Furthermore, the lack of Unionist consent for the Protocol is now recognised, and is seen as key to any new way forward to be found either in agreement with the EU, or through action by our own Government. The days of Unionism being marginalised and ignored on this fundamental issue are over. And despite the desires of the ‘rigorous implementers’ in SF, SDLP and Alliance to side-line Unionism and move towards majoritarianism, the DUP and all those who have consistently and vigorously opposed this Protocol will ensure our voice is heard. Now is the time for Unionists to stand together, and I would urge those unionists who in recent days have indicated a willingness to leave the DUP behind to restore the institutions to think again.

Of course this statement of intent by the Government is only words. It must be backed up by action, and that action must be imminent. Obfuscation and delay will not cut it, but will only lead to further economic harm and political instability.

The DUP is clear. Until our seven tests are met in any new way forward, fully functioning devolution will not be restored. The belligerence of the EU, and the political and economic aggression from the Irish Republic that brought us to this point must cease if they truly care about political stability in Northern Ireland. The DUP will continue to engage with the Government towards finding resolutions, and we encourage others to adopt that constructive approach so that the hard won political stability can be restored.”
