MP Marks VE Day with Tribute in Parliament
Upper Bann MP, Carla Lockhart, has marked the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day by paying tribute in Parliament to the vital role played by Northern Ireland and Upper Bann in particular in the Second World War.

With Big Ben and other London landmarks illuminated in Union Flag colours to mark the occasion, Ms Lockhart reflected on the enduring significance of the day and the proud legacy of local communities who contributed so much to the war effort.
Speaking on the issue Carla Lockhart MP said:
“VE Day is a moment of reflection and national pride. A time to honour the service and sacrifice made by so many across our nation during the Second World War.
In Parliament, I was honoured to highlight the immense contribution of Northern Ireland, and particularly of Upper Bann. Each of our towns played a distinct and vital role: Portadown was a centre of munitions and engineering; Banbridge supported the war through textile production and agriculture as part of the ‘Dig for Victory’ campaign; and Lurgan, through Brownlow House, provided accommodation and support for American forces stationed here.
These efforts, combined with the commitment of the 40,000 men and women from Northern Ireland who enlisted, exemplify the spirit and resilience of our people during the darkest of times.
As I left Westminster this evening, I was privileged to meet the Northern Ireland Veterans Commissioner against the backdrop of Big Ben lit up in tribute. It was a timely reminder of those who continue to serve in our armed forces today standing against tyranny and safeguarding the freedoms secured by previous generations.
I look forward to joining communities across Upper Bann in the days ahead as we commemorate this important anniversary and remember those who gave so much for peace.”
