Carla Lockhart MP Attends Blue Plaque Unveiling for Rev. William Tennent at Vinecash Presbyterian Church
Last week, Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart attended a special ceremony at Vinecash Presbyterian Church in Portadown to unveil a blue plaque honouring Rev. William Tennent, a minister who began his journey of faith and ministry in Northern Ireland before leaving a lasting legacy in the United States. Born in 1673, Rev. Tennent worshipped at Vinecash Presbyterian before emigrating to America in 1718, where he inspired the founding of Princeton University and played a foundational role in the establishment of American Presbyterianism.

Reflecting on the significance of the event, Carla Lockhart MP said:
“It was a privilege to be part of this special day at Vinecash Presbyterian Church, paying tribute to Rev. William Tennent, a man of profound faith whose influence spans continents. Rev. Tennent’s journey from Portadown to Pennsylvania is a testament to how humble beginnings can lead to extraordinary contributions. His work in America, particularly in establishing the ‘Log College,’ set the groundwork for over 60 schools and colleges, including Princeton University, and ignited the Great Awakening, a powerful movement of faith and revival.
The blue plaque at Vinecash commemorates his legacy and reminds us of the power of dedication and belief. It was particularly moving to hear the Portadown Male Voice Choir during the service—their music was a beautiful and fitting tribute to the occasion. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to celebrate Rev. Tennent’s story, which serves as a reminder of the lasting impact of a life lived with purpose.”
The plaque at Vinecash Presbyterian Church will stand as a tribute to Rev. Tennent’s journey, from his early ministry in Portadown to his transformative role in American Presbyterianism, inspiring generations on both sides of the Atlantic.
