MP welcomes fully funded ATV training for farmers

Carla Lockhart MP • July 24, 2025

DUP Agriculture spokesperson Carla Lockhart MP has welcomedan initiative offering free industry-accredited ATV training for farmers in GBand Northern Ireland.

Announced by the Farm Safety Foundation, in conjunction with the 13th annual Farm Safety Week, the Yellow Wellies bursary will provide 100 farmers with an opportunity to receive fully-funded training on the safe use of ATVs.

The Upper Bann MP said: “The latest figures from HSE confirm that all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) were the biggest single cause of fatal injury within the industry in 2024/25. Seven adults and two children died as a result of accidents in the UK.

“The ATV training bursary is a fantastic initiative which will be delivered by land-based training provider Lantra. The course is open to farmers and students over 16 years-old, and is designed to raise awareness of the dangers in the hope of reducing the number of serious incidents involving ATVs.”

Ms Lockhart added: “Online applications are now open. The training will provide knowledge and skills for the safe and responsible use of ATVs in various industry workplace settings. ATVs such as quads and gators are common on the majority of farms, and whilst very useful and versatile, they can be extremely dangerous.

“The Yellow Wellies bursary is available to students studying at a land-based college or university, and those working within the agricultural industry. I would encourage farmers and students in Northern Ireland to apply without delay. The course is beneficial to new and experienced ATV operators. Each participant who completes the course will receive a free helmet.”
