Lockhart marks World Down Syndrome Day in Westminster
DUP MP Carla Lockhart has said those with Down Syndrome must be treated with equality and respect by legislators, as she marked World Down Syndrome Day in Parliament.

The Upper Bann representative said:
“It is a stain on the standing of Parliament that legislation has passed through this place that discriminates against those with a diagnosis of Down Syndrome whilst in the womb.
I have been a long time champion of the rights of those with this condition. I know many who lives full, happy, healthy lives. Yet sadly, and shamefully, the majority of MPs believe such a diagnosis is legitimate grounds to end a life through abortion.
Today I met Heidi Crowter who has been a tireless campaigner for the rights of those with Down’s. She is an inspirational person who I am honoured to call a friend, and who offers so much as a champion for those with disabilities.
I trust that in time Parliament will once again treat those with Down’s with the equality and respect they deserve. I will certainly continue to work for that outcome as MP.”
