Home Office must take common sense approach to agri-food industry labour needs
DUP MP Carla Lockhart has said the Home Office must adopt a common sense approach to proposed changes to immigration rules, which are set to change in the Spring of this year.

The Upper Bann representative said:
“The UK's agri-food sector is reliant on a steady workforce. A common-sense approach to immigration within the Home Office is crucial for ensuring the sector's access to the necessary labour force. This industry heavily depends on seasonal workers for harvesting, planting, and processing crops, tasks that are time-sensitive and demand a flexible, often temporary, workforce.
Implementing immigration policies that understand the sector's seasonal nature and address its labour needs is vital. A flexible system that enables individuals to enter the country for seasonal work within the sector, while adhering to necessary regulations, is essential. It is concerning that the Home Secretary is indicating new rules will increase salary thresholds for example, whilst also changing the Shortage Occupation List. This is alarming for the agri-food industry and may well drive up costs.
The Home Office needs to consider the long-term viability of the agri-food sector, recognising that an inadequate labour force could impact production, supply chains, and ultimately consumers. Balancing immigration control with the practical needs of industries like agri-food is crucial. By adopting a common-sense approach to immigration, the Home Office can ensure that the agri-food sector thrives while meeting its labour requirements.”
