Carla Lockhart Presses New Health Minister On Baby-loss Certificates
Carla Lockhart, General Election candidate for Upper Bann, has written to the recently appointed Health Minister, Mike Nesbitt, to raise the need for baby-loss certificates to be introduced in Northern Ireland. Baby-loss certificates, which are available to parents in England, are a way to recognise the life of the baby who died as well as the grief experienced by their parents.

Carla Lockhart has been a proactive campaigner for the introduction of baby-loss certificates in Northern Ireland, having raised the matter in the House of Commons during Health and Social Care question time.
Commenting on the need for baby-loss certificates to be brought in here, Carla Lockhart stated:
“Baby-loss certificates need to be introduced in Northern Ireland urgently. Every baby's life, no matter how short, is significant and deserves recognition. Introducing these certificates would officially acknowledge the loss of a child, providing grieving families with formal recognition of their baby's existence, which can be a crucial part of the mourning process. By recognising the loss, the certificates can help in normalising grief and better allow parents to access bereavement support services. Introducing baby-loss certificates will also raise awareness about the issues surrounding baby loss and the impacts on bereaved families.”
“Offering baby-loss certificates in Northern Ireland, as is done in England, would ensure a consistent approach across the UK, helping families receive the same recognition and support regardless of where they live. That is why I and my colleagues in the DUP are calling for the Minister of Health, Mike Nesbitt, to make the introduction of baby-loss certificates in Northern Ireland a priority for his department.”
“We understand that there are ongoing discussions between government departments about how best to move this matter forward, however, I am very aware that this would be a relatively simple action to take with a major significant outcome for families experiencing the tragic loss of their child. To that end, I believe this is something which can, and should, be delivered without delay.”
