Carla Lockhart MP Promotes Access to Public Toilets for Disabled Constituents Through RADAR Key Scheme

Carla Lockhart MP • July 23, 2025

Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart is urging greater awareness of the RADAR key scheme, which provides people with disabilities secure and independent access to locked public toilets across the UK. This renewed call comes after she was contacted by a local constituent struggling to access public facilities due to their disability.

Speaking on the issue, Carla Lockhart said:

“Recently I was contacted by a local constituent about the challenges they faced in accessing public toilets due to a disability. This prompted me to once again promote the RADAR key, an important tool that ensures dignity, independence, and inclusion for disabled individuals when out and about in our community.

Everyone deserves the right to accessible and clean facilities, without unnecessary barriers. The RADAR key enables access to thousands of locked public toilets across the UK that are secured to prevent vandalism or misuse, and I’m pleased that Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council continues to support this scheme.”

The RADAR (Royal Association for Disability and Rehabilitation) key scheme is available locally, and any resident with a disability within the borough can acquire a key. The details are as follows:

Who can get a RADAR key?

Anyone with a disability.

Where can I get one?

Council Depot, Palace Reception, Armagh Civic Building, Banbridge

Civic Centre, Craigavon

How much does it cost?

£3.40 per key.

How long can I keep the key?

The key is yours for as long as you need it.

Carla Lockhart added:

“This is a small but significant step toward making our public spaces more accessible. I would encourage anyone who qualifies to obtain a RADAR key and take full advantage of the scheme. If anyone experiences issues or requires further information, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with my office we are here to help.”
